Hula
Hula, the ancient dance of Hawaii which has also evolved into a modern form that is famous for its grace and romantic music, is an interpretive and expressive dance that often tells a story or expresses meanings and feelings from almost any phase of life.
There are two style types of Hula: Hula Kahiko (ancient Hula) and Hula 'Auana (modern Hula).
Hula Kahiko ~ the dance done in the old energetic style accompanied by chants and percussion drumming on gourds or drums, or self accompanied with implements such as Puili (split bamboo), Ili Ili (river rocks), Uli Uli (feathered gourd) but no music. Much Hula Kahiko is associated with honoring ali'i (chiefs) or Kings and queens, gods and goddnesses, retelling historical events or describing places of interest. Many Hula Kahiko have been handed down for hundreds of years without changes.
Hula 'Auana ~ the modern Hawaiian dance featuring beautiful flowers, and graceful movements and is danced to singing and romantic sounds of musical instruments, such as ukuleles, steel quitar, bass, etc. This is a less formal freer form of Hula dancing than Hula Kahiko. The dancer may also use implements such as Puili (split bamboo), Ili Ili (river rocks), Uli Uli (feathered gourd). Hula 'Auana covers all subjects of life. Songs include fun party songs honoring people and places, exciting songs describing events and beautiful love songs.
